EDDIE
IZZARD |
Comedian
and actor Eddie Izzard's background
is as rambling as his surreal monologues.
Born in Aden, Yemen in 1962 as
the youngest of two sons, the Izzards
upped stciks and settled in Northern
Ireland in 1963 before moving again
to Wales and then England in 1967.
Following the death of his mother from cancer in 1968, the
young Izzard sought solace in comedy and was inspired by the
likes of Monty Python, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor and early
Benny Hill and spent much of the 1980s homing his skill as
a stand-up comedian by working as a street performer in Europe
and the United States.
He first appeared at London's The Comedy Store in 1987 and
spent the next few years developing his idiosyncratic style
before finally gaining recognition for his work in the form
of a 1993 British Comedy Award for "Live At The Ambassador's" and
another in 1996 for "Definite
Article"
By now, Izzard had publically revealed his penchant for cross-dressing
though he made it clear that wasn't a sexual thing, more that
he prefers dressing in women's clothing and wearing make up
going so far as to describe himself as a "staright transvestite" or "male
lesbian".
Comfortable in his new persona, Izzard took "Definite Article" outside
of the UK - including performing entirely in French in Paris
- and completed a successful stint in New York though his US
breakthrough didn't arrive until 1998 with the HBO special,
"Dress
To Kill".
Izzard also branched out into acting including TV and movie
performances, most notably in "Shadow Of The Vampire" in which
he co-starred with Willem Defoe and John Malkovich.
Eddie Izzard was voted amongst the Top 20 Greatest Comedy Acts
by his peers in the 2005 Comedian's Comedian poll.
