Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx - Hush Boy
Since the mid-Nineties Basement Jaxx have been relentless in their quest to deliver perfect pop with a cool, clubby twist. Last year’s Singles compilation showed just how eclectic their approach is, shameless musical magpies plundering every genre from soul to punk, techno to disco. New single Hush Boy, from current LP Crazy Itch Radio, harnesses euphoric disco with jet-powered electro-pop and the soul vocals of Vula Malinga – last heard on Oh My Gosh. The boys support Robbie Williams at Milton Keynes Bowl this month, and tour the UK from November 29.

Yungun & Mr Thing - Grown Man Business
Signed to British hip-hop label Silent Soundz, Yungun and Mr Thing are solo artists in their own right, who have collaborated on the album Grown Man Business. MC Yungun, aka Essa, released his own album Essance in 2004, while former Scratch Pervert turntablist Mr Thing is a regular at London club Fabric. Yungun’s smooth rap delivery with smart lyrics joins Thing’s laid-back and soulful grooves on Peter Pan Syndrome, an infectious affair telling the tale of two friends drifting apart. The boys’ mini UK tour starts in Brighton on September 29.

The Isles

The Isles - Perfumed Lands
The current trend of bands across the Atlantic being influenced by Eighties British pop, and in particular Manchester indie, shows no sign of slowing. While fellow New Yorkers Interpol and The Rapture are Joy Division and Happy Mondays respectively, newcomers The Isles are clearly into The Smiths. The Isles describe their sound as "the Smiths aesthetic: sharp songs which don't insult your intelligence". Hear for yourself on the band’s debut album Perfumed Lands.

The Roots Of American Music - New Orleans
Last August, when Hurricane Katrina struck, the world all but lost one of the greatest cities in musical history. Founded in 1718, the Big Easy, the birthplace of jazz, home to Mardi Gras, was all but washed away with the Mississippi. A fine compilation of blues and jazz tunes from this tragic city, The Roots of American Music: New Orleans features Fats Domino (reported missing and later found safe); Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Smiley Lewis and more. Classic, uplifting tracks to remind us how lucky we are to still have ‘The City That Care Forgot’
