Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg – Volume 2 There is no middle ground when it comes to the national treasure that is the Bard of ‘Barking’. Since 1984, Bragg has been winning friends and influencing people with his blend of folk and rock, lyrics of political protest and tender-hearted love, and his eloquent devotion to socialism. The Volume 2 box-set picks up his story with 1996’s Workers Playtime LP and features three other albums available to subscribers. Bragg is on a national book tour at present, touting his self-penned The Progressive Patriot, which explores notions of identity and Englishness.

The Pipettes - Judy
A blur of polka dots, handclaps and persuasive harmonies, Brighton’s all-girl trio The Pipettes are pouting purveyors of power-pop, with nods to the Phil Spector and Joe Meek sounds of the Fifties and Sixties. The Pipettes are natural successors to girl groups The Shangri-las and the The Supremes. This summer their debut album We Are The Pipettes spawned the perfect bubblegum pop singles Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me and Pull Shapes. Breezy new release Judy doesn’t put a kinky-booted foot wrong either.

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley
It’s one of the best adverts on telly at the moment. Elvis, all smiley with his low Mississippi mumble, big hair and white jumpsuit, introducing his band between songs during his Aloha from Hawaii concert in 1973. Only instead of his regular musicians, The King reveals a fantasy line-up of the Sugababes, Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, Keith Moon, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder. Radio 2’s ad is sure to get people putting together their own celebrity bands. Download the bulk of his early recordings at Wippit.

Groove Executive
Andy B and Alex G formed Groove Executive early in 2006. Their musical backgrounds are similar in that there was a time, not too many years ago, when good music spoke for itself through the people who played it, and listened to it. The house and garage coming out between 1997 and 2000 had a big impact on British (particularly London) dance music culture. It was as exciting a time for music as many of us can remember; We hope you enjoy Groove Executive's coming collection of funky house.
